Pre-Employment Structured Clinical Interview (PESCI)
A PESCI utilises a set of structured questions and scenarios, in an interview situation, to explore and validate an International Medical Graduate's (IMG) experience as provided in their Curriculum Vitae against the position description for which Special Purpose registration is sought.
Any applicant wishing to apply for Special Purpose registration to practise in any non-specialist position, other than a junior medical officer within a Queensland Health facility, is required to schedule and undertake a PESCI BEFORE making an application.
Applicants have until the end of January 2010 to schedule and undertake a PESCI. From 1 February 2010 the Board will not consider applications for Special Purpose Registration without evidence of a completed PESCI.
Please note: The Board reserves the right to request a PESCI for any other position when considering an application for Special Purpose registration. The application will be considered incomplete and not considered by the Board until the Interview Report has been received.
The PESCI is only one of a range of factors taken into account by the Board when considering an application for registration and as such, the successful completion of a PESCI does not necessarily guarantee registration by the Board.
How to make an application to undertake a PESCI
The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) has been authorised by the Board to undertake PESCIs on its behalf. Information on how to make application for a PESCI and the process can be found at the ACRRM website.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Will I have to schedule a PESCI?
- A PESCI is required to make application for special purpose registration to practise in any non-specialist position, other than a junior medical officer within a Queensland Health facility. You must schedule a PESCI unless you have already satisfactorily completed a PESCI for a position the Board considers is equivalent to the position for which you seek special purpose registration.
- What happens after I have undertaken the PESCI?
- ACRRM will forward to the Board and Interview Outcome Report. This report, together with all other information received in support of the application for special purpose registration, will be considered by the Board when determining the application. The PESCI is only one of a range of factors taken into consideration by the Board and a successful PESCI outcome does not guarantee registration by the Board.
- How do I arrange a PESCI?
- You can arrange the PESCI through the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine. Details can be found at the ACRRM website.
- How much does a PESCI cost?
- A charge of $1,500 AUD (+GST) is made by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine to conduct the PESCI.
- What happens if I don’t pass the PESCI?
- The Board will receive an Interview Outcome Report and its Registration Advisory Committee will consider this information, together with all other information received relating to your application for special purpose registration. If the Registration Advisory Committee proposes to recommend the Board refuse the application for special purpose registration, a Notice will be sent to you inviting you to make a submission as to why the Board should not refuse your application.
- How many times can I sit a PESCI?
- Undertaking a PESCI is dependant on you being offered employment for a specific position. You would be able to sit the PESCI again if the offer of employment remained. Remember, a PESCI is only one of a range of factors taken into consideration by the Board when deciding an application for special purpose registration and a successful PESCI outcome does not guarantee registration by the Board.
- Is a PESCI required for a transfer?
- The Board will not require you to undertake a PESCI conducted by the Australian College of Rural and Remote for a transfer under section 150 of the Medical Practitioners Registration Act 2001. However Queensland Health, as your employer, may require you to undertake its PESCI assessment for the transfer. The Board will require advice regarding any such assessment to accompany the Form 202 – Notification of Transfer of Registrants.
- Am I required to undertake a PESCI to renew my current special purpose registration?
- No. However, when deciding your application to renew special purpose registration, the Board may decide to impose a condition that an assessment equivalent to a PESCI be undertaken within a specified time if it has any concerns regarding your practice.
