Application processing times
An unprecedented number of applications received by the Board in May and June will result in longer processing times for some applications. The Medical Board and Queensland Health Area Health Services have an escalation process in place which ensures applications for critical positions are processed with priority. General practitioner applications are still being processed within normal timelines.
From 1 January 2006, the Executive Officer, Office of Health Practitioner Registrations Boards (OHPRB) became the Ministerial delegate responsible for certifying vacant medical positions as an 'area of need' for health care.
To allow medical graduates to practice only in a period of internship training that includes medicine, surgery and emergency medicine. Fifty-two weeks of supervised training must be completed within 3 years before unconditional general registration is granted.
To be eligible to undertake an internship you must have completed your medical degree in Australia or New Zealand.
Please note: To remove probationary internship conditions from your registration you must give a completion of internship notice M9 (
31k) to the Board, accompanied by the correct fee. The Board will then contact your supervisor and request an internship report M11 (
36k). After reviewing the internship report the Board will decide if you have satisfactorily completed the internship in order to remove the probationary conditions.
To allow medical practitioners to work independently within the boundaries of their training and competence.
To be eligible for general registration you must hold a primary medical qualification from Australia or New Zealand and have previously completed an internship.
If you currently hold general registration in another State or Territory of Australia, you are eligible to apply for registration under the mutual recognition pathway.
To allow medical practitioners to work as a specialist within the boundaries of their specialised training and competence.
Before you can commence practise as a specialist in Queensland you are required to complete a separate application for registration for each specialty required. If you are a specialist from South Australia or the ACT, or hold conditional registration as a specialist in another State or Territory of Australia you may apply through the mutual recognition pathway. Other medical practitioners must use the M2 Application Form (
186k) for registration as a specialist.
To be eligible for specialist registration you must have Fellowship of an Australian Specialist College as listed in Schedule 1 Qualifications for Specialist Registration

If you are applying for specialist registration and you are eligible to hold general registration in Queensland, you MUST apply for general registration before applying for specialist registration.
To allow medical practitioners who currently hold general or specialist registration in another State or Territory of Australia to also practise in Queensland.
To be eligible to apply for registration in Queensland under the Mutual Recognition Act 1992 (C’th), you must apply for a category of registration that exists both in your previous State or Territory and here in Queensland.
Specialist registration through the mutual recognition principle can only be accepted if you are currently registered as a specialist with the Medical Board of South Australia or the Medical Board of the Australian Capital Territory, or if you hold conditional registration as a specialist in another State or Territory of Australia.
