Application processing times
An unprecedented number of applications received by the Board in May and June will result in longer processing times for some applications. The Medical Board and Queensland Health Area Health Services have an escalation process in place which ensures applications for critical positions are processed with priority. General practitioner applications are still being processed within normal timelines.

International Medical Graduates (IMGs)

The term International Medical Graduate (IMG) is used to define someone who has gained their primary medical qualification outside of Australia or New Zealand.

If you are an IMG and have passed both Australian Medical Council (AMC) examinations – Multiple Choice Questionnaire and Clinical Examination – and hold an AMC Certificate you are eligible to apply for general registration in Queensland. Supervised practice conditions will apply to your registration – click here (PDF icon 16k) for details.

If you have specialist qualifications, training and experience which has been assessed by the AMC as being comparable to that of an Australian trained specialist, you are eligible to apply for specialist registration.

Please note: All special purpose applicants are required to progress towards general, specialist or s138 registration within four (4) consecutive years of holding registration in Queensland. Evidence of progress will be required at the end of each 12 month registration period. Please refer to the Progress Requirements Policy (PDF icon 89k) for further information.

If you hold fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), you can apply for special purpose registration.
