Application processing times
An unprecedented number of applications received by the Board in May and June will result in longer processing times for some applications. The Medical Board and Queensland Health Area Health Services have an escalation process in place which ensures applications for critical positions are processed with priority. General practitioner applications are still being processed within normal timelines.

Renewal of Registration

General and/or Specialist Registrants ONLY

After initial registration, an application for renewal of registration and registration fee is required by 30 June of each year to maintain your registration.  It is each medical practitioner's responsibility to ensure that the application for renewal of registration and registration fee is received in the office by the due date.

A renewal application will be forwarded to your current address, as recorded on the Register, in May of each year. An electronic copy is also placed on the Board’s website. If the application for renewal of registration and registration fee is not received by 30 June, your name will be removed from the Register.

Restoring Registration (1 July to 30 September)

If the Medical Board of Queensland did not receive your application for renewal of registration and registration fee before June 30, your registration will have expired.

You may apply for restoration of your registration by 30 September. An additional restoration fee of $100 will apply. A restored registration will commence from the date on which the Board makes its decision and cannot be backdated. The Public Register will be updated by the next business day.

Short Term Registrants

If you applied for and received a Short Term Fee Waiver for a period of employment in Queensland of less than five (5) weeks, this registration cannot be renewed.

To recommence practice in Queensland, you will have to submit a full application for registration. Details on how to apply are available for Australian and New Zealand Medical Graduates and International Medical Graduates.

Non-practising Registrants

Non-practising registrants are not required to renew their registration. Non-practising registration is continuous and will be automatically extended on 30 June each year.

Special Purpose Registrants

Your registration needs to be renewed annually, based on the date of your initial registration. A renewal application form is sent to you 60 days before your registration is due to expire. This is mailed to your current address recorded on the Register.

You may, if you wish, choose to extend your registration for a further period or change the registration category under which you are registered, if your training and experience allow you to do so.

If your completed renewal application form and registration fee are not received by the Board by the due date, your name will be removed from the Register and you will no longer be registered as a medical practitioner in Queensland.
